The opened gate must always rest on firm ground.
Never raise or lower your gate with anyone or anything under the gate.
Never stick your fingers in or around the openings, rollers or cables.
IMPORTANT NOTICE !
Always make sure that the aluminum rollers are turning freely, that the cable is
feeding straight in and out between the rollers and that the cable is riding in
the grooved portion of the rollers.
CAUTION !
Due to the many different sizes, weights and designs of trailers and tailgates on the market today, some minor adjustments may be necessary to insure your BackSaver Tailgate Assist System works properly. Extreme caution should always be taken after the initial installation of your BackSaver Tailgate assist System to insure it is working properly. Check to make sure there is not too much or too little tension on your tailgate. Never force the tailgate up or down, it should travel with very little effort in both directions. Two people are needed for installing this product to your trailer.
Step 1 - Attaching to the trailer side rail
- Place your tape measure at the rear edge of your side rail, and measure up the rail 7/16-inch and make a mark in the center of the top of the side rail, then measure up the rail 38 9/16-inches and make another mark in the center of the top of the side rail, then measure up the rail 39 1/2-inches and make another mark in the center of the top of the side rail, then measure up the rail 77 5/8-inches and make another mark in the center of the top of the side rail. Drill 1/2-inch holes through your side rail where you made your marks.
- Carefully, unfold and straighten the Backsaver unit, making sure, that the stickers are on the same side of the unit. Place the 5/16-inch, smooth top, mounting bolts through the holes at the ends, where the two pieces of the unit come together. Place the BackSaver on the rail, while guiding the 5/16-inch, smooth top, mounting bolts through the 1/2-inch holes you just drilled. Also make sure, that the two sections of the BackSaver unit are straight, even and tight against each other and that the stickers are aligned on the same side of the unit.
- Insert the 5/16-inch x 2 1/2-inch mounting bolts through the mounting holes on each end of the Backsaver unit and the holes you just drilled into your side rails. Then put on and securely tighten the 5/16-inch flat washers, lock washers and nuts, in that order, to all the mounting bolts. Again making sure, that the two sections of the BackSaver unit are straight, even and tight against each other before securely tightening the bolts.
- Drill a 1/2-inch hole into the plastic end cap as close to an edge as possible and then insert it into the end of the housing with the hole you just drilled turned to the bottom.
Step 2 - Attaching to the trailer gate
The following measurements are for trailers with standard side rails 11-13 inches in height.
- Measure up the gate 36-inches from the bottom and make a mark on the outside of the tailgate's side rail.
- Drill a 1/2-inch hole through the outside of the tailgate side rail, where you made your mark.
- Slide the 1/2-inch x 3 1/2-inch socket head bolt through the first link in the chain. Then screw the 1/2-inch nut all the way to the end of the threaded portion of the bolt. Then slide the lock washer and the flat washer, in that order, onto the bolt. Then insert the bolt into the hole; you just drilled, on the side of your tailgate, being very cautious because the the assist will be under tension. Then put on the 1/2-inch flat washer, lock washer and nut, in that order, and tighten both nuts securely.
The BackSaver 1-side assist should now take about 90% of the weight off most tailgates. If it does not, you must increase the tension by attaching your tailgate to the second or third link in the chain and/or raising the attachment point on your tailgate. If there is too much tension on your gate, lower the point at which you have the chain attached to your tailgate a few inches.
