BackSaver Installation Instructions
2-sided Assist - Model / lot # 10034681
January 1, 2002

WARNING !

This product is not a substitute for always pinning, latching or locking the gate in it's upright position.

This product does not make the gate weight bearing. The opened gate must always rest on firm ground.

Never raise or lower your gate with anyone or anything under the gate.

Never stick your fingers in or around the openings, rollers or cables.

Never use this 2-sided assist as a 1-side assist. There are important differences.

CAUTION !

Due to the many different sizes, weights and designs of trailers and tailgates on the market today, some minor adjustments may be necessary to insure your BackSaver Tailgate Assist System works properly. Extreme caution should always be taken after the initial installation of your BackSaver Tailgate assist System to insure it is working properly. Check to make sure there is not too much or too little tension on your tailgate. Never force the tailgate up or down, it should travel with very little effort in both directions. Please call our service department, toll free, at 1-877-388-8895 if you have any questions or problems with installation.

Every week, inspect your BackSaver Tailgate Assist for any accidental damages, excessive wear or any other problems that might keep it from working properly.

Important Notice !

Always make sure that the aluminum rollers are turning freely, that the cable is feeding straight in and out between the rollers and that the cable is riding in the grooved portion of the rollers.

If your cable ever slides over and out of it's grooved roller position…

First, make sure your cable is properly aligned and pulling out straight.

Second, make sure your rollers are centered in their positions and tightened securely.

If this doesn't fix the problem…

  • put your tailgate in the upright position and lock, pin or latch it to secure it there.
  • remove the bottom rollers on each unit.
  • install the two grooved rollers which are or will be supplied to you in place of the ones you just removed, making sure the cable is situated in the grooved portion of both the top and bottom rollers, tightening securely.
Thank you for purchasing our product.

Two people are needed for installing this product to your trailer.

Step 1 - Attaching to the trailer side rail

    1. Place your tape measure, at the rear edge of your side rail, and measure up the rail 38 inches and make a mark in the center of the top of the side rail. Then measure up the rail 40-inches and make another mark in the center of the top of the side rail. Drill a 3/8-inch hole where you made your marks. Repeat this process on the other side rail.

    2. Carefully, unfold and straighten the Backsaver units, making sure, that the stickers are on the same side of each unit. Place the 5/16-inch, smooth top, mounting bolts through the holes at the ends, where the two sides of the unit come together. Place the BackSavers on the rails, Making sure the decals are facing to the outside of the trailer on both sides, while guiding the 5/16-inch, smooth top, mounting bolts, through the 3/8-inch holes you just drilled. Also make sure, that the two sections of each BackSaver units are straight, even and tight against each other and that the stickers are aligned on the same side of each unit.

    3. Mark the top of the side rails, where the two end mounting bolts need to go for each unit.

    4. Remove the BackSaver units and drill 9/16-inch holes, where you made your two marks on each side rail.

    5. Place the BackSaver units back onto the side rails and insert the 1/2-inch x 2 1/2-inch mounting bolts on each end of the Backsaver units. Then put on and securely tighten the 1/2-inch lock washers and nuts and the 5/16-inch flat washers, lock washers and nuts, in that order, to all the mounting bolts. Again, making sure, that the decals are facing to the outside of the trailer on both sides, and the two sections of the BackSaver units are straight, even and tight against each other, before securely tightening the bolts.

    6. Drill a 3/8-inch hole into each end cap and then insert into each unit, hole side down.

Step 2 - Attaching to the trailer gate

The following measurements are for trailers with standard side rails 11-13 inches in height.

    1. Measure the height of your gate.

    2. If you have a 4-ft. tall gate, measure up the gate 31-inches from the bottom and make a mark on the outside of each of the gate's side rails. If you have a 5-ft. tall gate, measure up the gate 36-inches from the bottom and make a mark on the outside of each of the gate's side rails. If you have a 6-ft. tall gate, measure up the gate 41-inches from the bottom and make a mark on the outside of each of the gate's side rails.

    3. Drill a 3/8-inch hole on each side of the gate side rail, where you made your marks.

    4. Slide the 3/8-inch x 2-inch smooth shank bolts through the first link in the chains and insert the bolts into the holes you just drilled on each side of your gate. Put on the 3/8-inch flat washers and lock nuts, in that order, and tighten securely.
The BackSaver should now hold your tailgate stationary at any position, between completely up and completely down. If it does not, you must increase the tension, by attaching your tailgate to the second or third link in the chain and/or raising the attachment point on the tailgate.

If there is significantly too much tension on your gate…

put your tailgate in the upright position and lock, pin or latch it to secure it there.

    • disconnect the chains from the tailgate.

    • take the top front rollers off of each unit.

    • take the plastic end caps off to expose the inner springs.

    • take the bolts which are connecting the springs to the steel housings loose and disconnect the smaller inner springs from these bolts.

    • reattach the larger spring to the bolts and place the bolts back into their original positions and tighten securely.

    • put the plastic end caps back on, reattach the rollers and then reattach the chains to the tailgate, tightening all securely.
If there is only a little too much tension on your gate….
    • lower the point at which you have the chains attached to your tailgate a few inches.

  • Easy as 1, 2, 3, 4 !
